Very Long Curly Hair for Men: Trim, Styling and Day-Two Refresh

Men's very long curly and wavy golden-brown hair past the elbows after a long hair trim by Sergio Slavnov

Golden-brown curls past the elbows

Golden-brown curls and waves reach past the elbows, full at the crown and still moving all the way down. This is men's very long curly hair at its best: a long hair trim that keeps the length and gives the curl pattern room to stack.

Curly hair at this length is rare. Most men's curly hair starts to frizz, dry out and lose its shape long before it reaches the chest. Keeping curls defined from root to tip over this much length takes careful cutting and the right styling routine.

Below, men's hairstylist Sergio Slavnov explains how this trim was done, why curls need their weight, and how to style and refresh very long curls at home.

The trim: clean ends, full sides, one soft shape

The ends were cleared of dry, thinned-out hair without losing length, so the curls and waves keep their weight and shape from root to tip. This is a scissor cut men's haircut done with a long hair trim approach, built to protect length while keeping the curl pattern clean.

Three decisions shaped the result:

  1. Remove only the damaged ends. Thin, see-through tips make long curls look stringy. Taking off just that part keeps the bottom as dense as the top.
  2. Leave the sides full. Instead of thinning the sides to make the head look narrow, they were left full. The hair frames the head in one wide, soft shape, which suits curls this long.
  3. Keep the front long and loose. The front pieces fall around the face with no short layers, so they blend into the rest of the curls.

Why long curls need their weight

Curls stack. Each curl rests on the one below it, and together they build the full, round shape you see in the photo. Take too much weight out and the stack collapses: curls separate, frizz appears, and the hair looks thin and flat at the bottom.

That's why heavy thinning and razor cutting are risky on men's curly hair. They make the hair lighter for a few weeks, but the curls lose definition and the ends wear out faster.

Very long hair keeps its natural movement only as long as the ends stay healthy. A careful trim matters more than any product.

That's why this cut is trimmed once every six months: often enough to clear the dry ends before they split higher up, and rarely enough to keep every inch of length.

Styling day one: Curl Activating Spray on damp hair

Avenue Man Curl Activating Spray brings the pattern to life. It wakes up the curls and waves, defines the clumps and keeps frizz down without a crunchy feel.

  1. Detangle in the shower. With conditioner still in, comb from the ends up with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Never brush curls dry.
  2. Rinse, then blot. Press the water out with a T-shirt or microfiber towel. A regular towel roughs up the curls.
  3. Mist section by section. Over this much length, spray in sections, front, sides and back, so every part gets product, not just the top layer.
  4. Scrunch from mid-length to ends. Cup the curls and press up toward the scalp. You'll feel the clumps form.
  5. Hands off while it dries. Air-dry or diffuse on low. Touching wet curls breaks the clumps apart.
  6. Shake the roots at the end. Once dry, lift at the scalp with your fingertips for volume at the crown.

Day two and three: refresh instead of rewashing

Long curls don't need washing every day. Washing too often dries them out. By day two, the curls loosen and some frizz shows up at the crown, and a quick refresh brings them back.

  • Mist with water first. Lightly dampen the hair with a spray bottle, focusing on the flat or frizzy areas.
  • Add a little Curl Activating Spray. Less than on day one, just enough to wake up the pattern.
  • Scrunch and twist. Scrunch the ends, and twist any loose sections around your finger to reform the curl.
  • Give it ten minutes. Let it dry on its own before you go out.

At night, a loose high ponytail on top of the head, or a silk pillowcase, keeps the curls from getting crushed and makes the morning refresh easier.

Curl spray or curl mousse: which one for your hair?

Both define curls and waves, but they feel different and suit different hair.

Curl Activating Spray Curl Defining Mousse
Feel Light, almost weightless Light foam with more body
Best for Curls that are already strong; day-two refresh Looser waves that need help forming
Hold Soft Medium
When to use Damp hair, and between washes Damp hair, after washing

If your curls are full and defined on their own, like the ones in this photo, the spray is usually enough. If your waves are loose and drop by midday, try the mousse. You can see it in action in Andrew's long hair story.

When your hair is your trademark

For musicians, artists and models, long curls are part of how people recognize them. Losing four inches to a careless cut isn't a small mistake. It changes the look on stage, in photos and on camera.

That's why these clients need a men's hairstylist who works with length every day:

  • Plan the trim around events. A trim a week or two before a shoot or a tour gives the curls time to settle.
  • Say what can't change. Length, the front, the overall shape. A good consultation sets these limits before the scissors come out.
  • Know how it behaves under lights. Heat and humidity on stage make curls expand. Styling that holds the pattern without stiffness matters more than strong hold.

Long curls are a creative men's haircut in their own right. Done right, it looks effortless.

Frequently asked questions

Can men grow curly hair this long?
Yes, but it takes years and gentle care. Curly hair grows at the same speed as straight hair, but it looks shorter because the curls shrink.

How often should very long curly hair be trimmed?
For keeping length, once every six months is usually enough. The trim removes only the dry, thinned-out ends, so the curls keep their weight and shape.

Should long curly hair be cut wet or dry?
Curls change shape as they dry, so it helps to see them dry or mostly dry before taking length. That way the cut matches how the hair actually falls.

Why do my long curls look flat at the bottom?
Usually the ends are too thin or damaged, or too much weight was taken out. A trim that removes only the worn ends brings the shape back.

Can I brush my curly hair?
Not when it's dry. Brushing breaks the curls into frizz. Detangle with conditioner in the shower instead.

How much does a long hair trim with Sergio Slavnov cost?
A men's haircut with Sergio Slavnov is $250.
